The Walk
By Elise Ruiz de Porras
So here I am. Working mother of 4 children. Closing in on my 40’s. Overweight. Tired. I know I’m not healthy. I don’t want to feel like this. I want to change. I know that the only way this situation will change is if I’m willing to change. Speaking with other women has taught me that I’m not alone and that this journey is not as easy as it sounds.
My name is Elise, and I am a Founding Partner and the Holistic Consultant at Nurture We. I’m a first-time blogger and a bit new to this, so please bear with me. I’m starting this blog so that if you are going through something similar, you’ll know you’re not alone. And although I don’t know where this journey will take us, it's OK, because you and I will take this road together. I want to take this journey so that I can regain some joy in this aspect of my life, and by blogging about it, I can have some fun while I am at it!
What I want to do is try different things (exercises, different foods, challenges, products, methods, etc.) and see what works, what doesn’t work, and ask for your feedback and experiences as well. Many of us have tried and tried again to lose weight, but can’t seem to get to our goal. That’s my experience right there! Do you know how many different things I have tried? How many workouts and programs I wasted money on? A LOT!!!!! I know some people do great on one system but poorly on others, and that makes sense. No one thing will work for 100% of the people 100% of the time. But that’s the point of this, I want to try until I reach my goal, and I want you to try along with me. My goal is not to reach a certain weight, but rather, it is to feel good, feel healthy, feel strong.
It is easy for people to say, “Just eat right and exercise.” If this were an easy thing to do there would be no obesity or illness. We aren’t all built the same--different metabolisms, different body types, different genes, different medical conditions, different levels of self-control, different psychological states, different cultures, different preferences--the list goes on and on. What may work for me may not work for you. Recent research shows that people that lose a large amount of weight will end up regaining it; other studies show that weight is not necessarily an indicator of good health. The thing I am seeking is to feel good about myself and feel healthy. And I want you to walk with me so that we can feel good and healthy together.
I’ll be looking at different options, and I will let you know in my next post where I decided to start. Denise, my friend and founder of Nurture We will be trying out something a little different, and together, we will share some of our insights. This is not going to be a blog celebrating only wins. I am almost certain that as with anything in life, there will be losses. But we will use them to push us forward. I promise to never pretend I know all the answers, and keep an open mind. And I ask that you do the same!
I want to hear from you! Let me know where you are on your journey. Comment below.
